TLDR Beard hair can be used for hair transplants in severe alopecia cases, with minimal complications and good results.
The clinical paper "BEARD—A Potential Donor Site in Grade 6 and Grade 7 Alopecia: A Case Series" discusses a study involving 20 patients with Grade 6 and 7 androgenic alopecia. These patients were treated using beard hair as an additional donor site for hair transplantation. The study highlights the local anatomy, procedural technicalities, and method of harvesting. The development of follicular unit extraction (FUE) has enabled the use of non-scalp hair in hair restoration, thereby increasing the overall donor graft availability. Beard hair, which has unique characteristics compared to scalp hair, has both advantages and disadvantages. The study concludes that the minimal complications and potential benefits have led to an increase in the use of beard grafts in recent years. Beard to scalp transplantation is a viable alternative in cases requiring an expanded source of donor hair.
