TLDR Baricitinib effectively regrows scalp hair in most people with severe alopecia areata.
The study evaluated the effectiveness of baricitinib, a JAK inhibitor, in achieving full scalp hair regrowth in patients with severe alopecia areata (AA), including 257 adolescents. In the BRAVE-AA trials, significant hair regrowth was observed, with a majority of patients achieving a SALT score of less than 10 or 5 over 36 and 52 weeks. Among adults treated with 4mg of baricitinib, 75% achieved a SALT score of less than 10 by week 52, and 62.7% achieved a score of less than 5. Adolescents showed similar results, with 86.1% achieving a SALT score of less than 10 by week 36. The 2mg dosage also showed positive results, though slightly less effective than the 4mg dosage. The study concludes that baricitinib leads to increasing hair regrowth over time in both adults and adolescents.
