TLDR Mutations in the hairless gene cause hair loss and skin cysts in rhesus macaques.
The study described atrichia with papular lesions (APL) in a rhesus macaque, a condition characterized by the absence of normal hair follicles and the presence of intradermal cystic structures. This condition was linked to mutations in the hairless (hr) gene, which is known to affect hair growth in both mice and humans. The researchers identified a compound heterozygous mutation in the hr gene of a hairless rhesus macaque, which was born to unrelated parents. Skin biopsies from the affected macaque showed the replacement of normal hair follicles with dermal cysts and comedones, similar to the skin phenotype seen in hairless mice and humans with APL.
