TLDR The study found that heart disease is common in people with PCOS and that being overweight is a major risk factor; lifestyle changes and medication are important for management.
The study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, co-morbidities, pharmacological therapy, and effectiveness of lifestyle changes in managing polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and related comorbidities. The 6-month prospective observational study involved 120 PCOS patients, with 90 of them being in the 20-30 age group. The study found a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease co-morbidities among PCOS patients and identified a high Body Mass Index (BMI) as the most common risk factor for PCOS. The study also emphasized the importance of evaluating complications such as infertility in at-risk individuals. The findings underscored the critical role of medication and lifestyle modifications in managing PCOS, suggesting that patients should receive advice regarding lifestyle modifications from a clinical pharmacist.
