TLDR Cow placenta extract has strong antioxidant effects and can delay skin aging in mice.
The study investigated the antioxidant capacity of Cow Placenta Extract (CPE) and its protective effect on skin aging in mice. The results showed that CPE has strong antioxidant activities, increasing the activity of various antioxidant enzymes and decreasing the content of malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of oxidative stress. CPE also decreased the gene and protein expression of matrix metalloproteinase 1a (MMP-1a) and matrix metalloproteinase 3 (MMP-3), which are involved in collagen degradation, and increased the expression of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1), which are involved in collagen synthesis. Histopathological analysis showed that CPE reduced collagen damage, increased collagen synthesis, and reduced its degradation to delay skin aging. Furthermore, CPE improved the histological structures of the skin by reducing epidermis damage and increasing the number of hair follicles and the thickness of the dermis. The study concluded that CPE could be used to alleviate skin aging.
