TLDR Combining antihistamines with topical treatment improves hair regrowth in alopecia areata.
A 12-week study involving 91 patients with alopecia areata evaluated the efficacy of combining antihistamines (fexofenadine or ebastine) with local betamethasone therapy. The main group (43 patients) received both treatments, while the comparison group (48 patients) received only the topical therapy. Results showed a significant reduction in alopecia severity and higher hair regrowth rates in the main group, with SALT scores decreasing to 8.50% compared to 16.48% in the comparison group. Hair regrowth was 69.61% in the main group versus 24.56% in the comparison group. The study suggests that antihistamines may enhance treatment efficacy by stabilizing hair follicle pathology, warranting further research into their role in alopecia areata.
