TLDR A gluten-free diet improves growth and reduces symptoms in children with celiac disease.
This study evaluated the effects of a gluten-free diet (GFD) on 74 children aged 2-18 with celiac disease. After implementing a GFD, significant improvements were observed in height, weight, and height z-scores, although the distribution of height z-scores among patients did not change. The number of children with low body weight and BMI for age decreased. Clinical symptoms such as diarrhea, flatulence, abdominal pain, constipation, hair loss, skin dryness, and weight loss significantly reduced, though abdominal distention increased. Overall, adherence to a GFD improved growth and reduced symptoms in children with celiac disease, suggesting beneficial effects, but further research is needed.
