TLDR Androgen receptors are found in some skin tumors but not in hair follicle tumors.
The study investigated androgen receptor (AR) expression in normal skin and 52 cases of various skin appendage tumors using immunohistochemical methods. In normal skin, AR was found in seboblasts, some sebocytes, and variably in eccrine and apocrine glands, but not in hair follicles or epidermis. In sweat gland tumors, AR was present in the inner layer cells of the tubuloglandular component in 10 of 13 chondroid syringomas, while other tumors were nonreactive. Sebaceous gland tumors with mature sebaceous elements showed AR expression, but sebaceous epitheliomas and carcinomas did not. Hair follicle tumors generally lacked AR expression, except for AR-positive mature sebaceous glands in steatocystomas.
