TLDR New delivery systems are improving siRNA treatments for skin conditions.
This review discusses the challenges and recent advancements in the transdermal delivery of small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) for treating skin conditions. The main obstacle is the low skin permeability of siRNAs due to their negative charge, high polarity, and susceptibility to degradation. Recent progress has been made in developing delivery systems using lipids, polymers, cell-penetrating peptides, nanoparticles, and other agents to improve the efficiency of siRNA delivery. These innovations in drug delivery systems are crucial for enhancing the therapeutic potential of siRNAs in both cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical applications.
