TLDR Adenine helps delay aging in human hair follicle cells.
The study demonstrated that adenine supplementation significantly stimulated the proliferation and inhibited the senescence of cultured human follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPCs). Adenine activated AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and increased cellular NAD+ levels, which are associated with anti-senescence effects. However, adenine-induced AMPK activation did not inhibit the mTOR signaling pathway. Microarray analysis confirmed that adenine prevented the decreases in gene expression related to proliferation and telomere maintenance. These findings suggested that adenine could be beneficial for expanding HFDPCs in vitro, potentially aiding therapeutic applications for hair growth.
