TLDR Certain essential oils can activate a human skin receptor, potentially helping with skin disorders.
The study investigated the activation of the human Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid Subtype 1 (TRPV1) by essential oils using human TRPV1-expressing HEK293 cells. Out of 31 essential oils screened, four (rose, thyme geraniol, palmarosa, and tolu balsam) activated TRPV1. Citronellol and geraniol, the main constituents of some of these oils, were identified as new human TRPV1 agonists. The study provided a scientific basis for the use of certain essential oils in activating TRPV1, which could have therapeutic implications for skin disorders. Further detailed studies were recommended to understand their structure and physiological functions.
