TLDR Hereditary factors affect acne duration, not severity, and late-onset acne in females has different causes.
The study analyzed 210 patients with acne, focusing on clinical and epidemiological features to understand their role in acne pathogenesis and severity. It found that hereditary factors influenced acne duration but not severity, and late-onset acne, mostly in females, had different pathogenetic mechanisms. Male hormones were linked to acne in specific body areas, and females often developed acne post-menarche, with pre-menarche onset leading to more severe truncal acne. A new "Differentiated GAGS" scoring system was developed for face and trunk severity, correlating well with existing methods. The study also highlighted a potential role for CYP450 1A1 polymorphisms in acne, suggesting further research is needed.
