TLDR Hair follicles in androgenetic alopecia age faster, especially in the front.
The study investigated whether hair follicles in androgenetic alopecia (AGA) exhibit accelerated aging by comparing the methylation levels of genes associated with aging in frontal and occipital follicles. The biological age of the follicles was assessed using methylation status of specific genes (n = 3), and microarray analysis was conducted on dermal papilla (DP) from both regions (n = 4). Results showed that frontal follicles have a significantly higher biological age than occipital follicles, indicating accelerated aging in AGA. Transcriptomic analysis revealed increased expression of aging-related genes in frontal DP, and decreased expression of TRPS1, a gene that represses EGR1 and is associated with vellus-type hair. The findings suggest that accelerated aging in frontal follicles may be driven by changes in TRPS1 regulation.

A 29-year-old woman is experiencing gradual hair thinning since age 15, suspects Androgenic Alopecia, and has tried 5% minoxidil with little success. She has purchased various hair loss treatments including minoxidil, dutasteride, finasteride, and spironolactone, but is cautious about starting them due to potential interactions with her ADHD medication.

The DHT itch is linked to hair loss and persists despite finasteride use; switching to dutasteride helped alleviate the itch and promoted regrowth. Some users suggest seborrheic dermatitis as a cause and recommend treatments like medicated shampoos, vitamin D, and minoxidil.

community Why is dht bad for scalp hair but good for hair on the rest of body?

The conversation discusses why DHT (dihydrotestosterone) negatively affects scalp hair but promotes growth elsewhere on the body. Various opinions include genetic predispositions, differences in hair follicle reactions to DHT, and the potential role of Omega-3 in reducing inflammation and promoting hair health.
