TLDR Mice treatments didn't grow hair, a patient treatment may affect immune response, and people with hair loss often feel anxious or depressed.
In a study from 2003, 21 mice with alopecia areata were treated with nitric oxide synthase inhibitors, Pentoxifylline and S-methyl-isothiourea, but showed no significant hair growth or reduction in hair follicle inflammation. Another study with 8 alopecia areata patients treated with diphencyprone showed a change in scalp and blood immune cells, indicating a potential immune response modulation. Additionally, a psychological study involving 46 patients found that while stress may not cause alopecia areata, anxiety and depression were common among those with hair loss, suggesting a need for psychological support.
