TLDR 8-OHdG may help diagnose and assess alopecia areata.
The study investigated the serum level of 8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in 50 patients with alopecia areata (AA) compared to 30 healthy controls. It found that AA patients had significantly higher levels of 8-OHdG, with a statistically significant difference (P-value = 0.018). The study concluded that 8-OHdG could serve as a promising diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for AA, demonstrating fair diagnostic accuracy with a sensitivity of 70% and specificity of 60% at a cutoff value of 18.1 ng/ml. This suggests that 8-OHdG may be useful in detecting the presence and severity of AA.
