TLDR Teak leaf extract can help treat hair loss, and its effectiveness varies by geographic origin.
The study explores the inhibition of steroid 5-alpha reductase (S5AR) by teak (Tectona grandis L.f.) leaf extracts, relevant for treating androgenic alopecia. A clinical study with 81 male subjects confirmed the effectiveness of a hair growth formulation containing teak leaf extract. Geographic origin significantly affects the chemical profile and S5AR activity, with samples from central Thailand showing the highest activity. Six diterpenoid S5AR inhibitors were identified, including four novel compounds. The findings emphasize the importance of geographic factors in bioactivity and the potential of metabolomics in discovering bioactive compounds, supporting the therapeutic use of teak leaves in S5AR-related conditions.
