TLDR The 39th Manfred Donike Workshop discussed methods for detecting misuse of steroids, gene doping, and the complexity of identifying drug residues in urine, highlighting the ongoing efforts to improve global anti-doping work.
The 39th Manfred Donike Workshop on Doping Analysis, held virtually in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, had 400 international representatives from World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-accredited laboratories. The conference focused on analytical aspects of steroidal substances and peptide hormones, biotransformations of doping agents, gene doping, and challenges from the athlete's exposome. Techniques for detecting misuse of synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) were discussed, including the use of the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) and monitoring carbon isotope signatures. The conference also explored peptidic drugs, primarily growth hormone secretagogues (GHS) and growth hormone releasing hormones (GHRHs), and their metabolism. Methods for detecting gene doping in dried blood spots were presented. The conference also addressed the complexity of determining whether drug residues in urine samples were due to intentional doping, unknowing intake, or legitimate use of certain substances. The potential for dietary supplements to contain prohibited substances was also discussed. The conference highlighted the multifaceted nature of doping controls and the continuous efforts to optimize global antidoping work.
