research Diffuse Alopecia and Thyroid Atrophy Associated with Selenium and Zinc Deficiency in Sheep

February 2019 in “Americanae (AECID Library)”
This study described cases of diffuse alopecia and thyroid alterations in five sheep with selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) deficiency. The sheep exhibited pronounced alopecia, dry and brittle hair, and skin abnormalities. Blood tests revealed low serum levels of T3 and T4 thyroid hormones, as well as low Zn and Se levels in both serum and liver. Necropsy findings included cachexia, serous fat atrophy, and marked thyroid gland atrophy. Microscopically, the thyroid showed atrophy and follicle dilation, while the skin had hyperkeratosis and glandular changes. The study concluded that thyroid disease affected the skin due to thyroid hormones interacting with skin receptors, highlighting the importance of mineral supplementation for maintaining body homeostasis.
