organic compounds aiding in defense, competition, or reproduction

Secondary metabolites are organic compounds produced by plants, fungi, and bacteria that are not directly involved in their growth, development, or reproduction. Unlike primary metabolites, which are essential for basic cellular functions, secondary metabolites often serve ecological roles such as defense against predators, competition, and facilitating reproductive processes. Examples include alkaloids, terpenoids, and flavonoids, which can have medicinal properties or be used in various industrial applications.
