    Glossary Proto-oncogene

normal gene involved in cell growth and division

A proto-oncogene is a normal gene that plays a role in cell growth and division. However, if this gene mutates or is expressed at high levels, it can become an oncogene, which may lead to uncontrolled cell growth and potentially cancer.
