December 2023 in “Middle East Fertility Society Journal” Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, with its relationship to low-grade chronic inflammation being complex and not fully understood. This review highlights the association between PCOS and various inflammatory markers such as IL-6, TNF-α, IL-17, CRP, NLR, and PLR. Increased levels of IL-17, IL-1, and IL-8 are linked to PCOS, and the CRP to albumin ratio is suggested as a precise biomarker for the condition. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is associated with poor cardiovascular health and metabolic syndrome, potentially influencing testosterone production. Additionally, the platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and mean platelet volume (MPV) are newly associated with PCOS. Understanding these inflammatory markers' roles could lead to new treatment approaches for PCOS.
