    GlossaryBoils (Skin abscesses)

painful, pus-filled skin abscesses caused by infected hair follicles

Boils, also known as furuncles, are painful, pus-filled bumps that form under the skin when bacteria infect and inflame one or more hair follicles. They often start as red, tender areas and gradually become firm and more painful as they fill with pus. Boils can occur anywhere on the body but are most common on the face, neck, armpits, shoulders, and buttocks.
