Eyelashes are the short, curved hairs that grow at the edge of the eyelids. They serve a protective function by preventing dust, debris, and small particles from entering the eye, and they also trigger a reflexive blink response when touched, further safeguarding the eye. For professionals, it's noteworthy that eyelashes have a growth cycle similar to scalp hair, consisting of anagen (growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting) phases, which can be relevant in diagnosing and treating conditions like madarosis (loss of eyelashes) or trichotillomania (compulsive pulling of eyelashes).

How does latanoprost work to make eyelashes and possibly scalp hair grow? Studies report that latanoprost, a prostaglandin analog, lengthens the anagen (growth) phase of hair follicles, which is the mechanism given for the eyelash thickening seen in glaucoma patients; on the scalp the evidence is one 16-man pilot study and animal work, so the effect there is unproven.
Can latanoprost be safely applied to the scalp, or is it only for eyelashes? Latanoprost is not approved for use on the scalp and its safety there has not been established: the only human scalp evidence is one 24-week pilot trial in 16 men, and clinicians flag irritation, skin darkening and unknown absorption over a large area as open risks.
