    GlossaryBasal Cell Carcinoma

most common skin cancer, originating in basal epidermal cells

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer, originating in the basal cells, which are found in the deepest layer of the epidermis. It typically appears as a small, shiny bump or nodule on sun-exposed areas of the skin, such as the face and neck, and is usually caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. While BCC rarely metastasizes, it can cause significant local damage if not treated promptly.
