    GlossaryRadiation

emission of energy as waves or particles through space

Radiation refers to the emission and propagation of energy through space or a material medium in the form of waves or particles. It can be ionizing, like X-rays and gamma rays, which have enough energy to remove tightly bound electrons from atoms, potentially causing cellular damage and hair loss (alopecia), or non-ionizing, like visible light and microwaves, which generally do not have enough energy to ionize atoms. Understanding the type and exposure level of radiation is crucial for both medical treatments and safety protocols.
