    GlossaryNail Ridges

linear elevations or depressions on the nail surface

Nail ridges are linear elevations or depressions that run either vertically or horizontally across the surface of the nails. Vertical ridges, which run from the cuticle to the tip of the nail, are often a normal part of aging and can be caused by minor trauma or nutritional deficiencies. Horizontal ridges, also known as Beau's lines, can indicate more serious underlying health issues such as systemic illness, malnutrition, or trauma to the nail matrix.
