Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in every cell of the body, essential for producing hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help digest foods. While the body needs some cholesterol to function properly, high levels of it in the blood can increase the risk of heart disease by contributing to the formation of plaque in arteries.
