Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is crucial for maintaining healthy bones and teeth by aiding in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the gut. There are two main forms: vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), with D3 being more effective at raising blood levels of the vitamin. Deficiency in vitamin D can lead to conditions such as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.
