fat-soluble vitamin essential for calcium absorption and bone health

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is crucial for maintaining healthy bones and teeth by aiding in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the gut. It can be obtained through exposure to sunlight, certain foods, and supplements. There are two main forms: vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), with D3 being more effective at raising blood levels of the vitamin. Deficiency in vitamin D can lead to conditions such as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.
