learn Caffeine
Stimulant used in hair shampoos and lotions
- Does caffeine stimulate hair growth or only slow hair loss? Caffeine stimulates hair follicles in laboratory cultures, and one open-label, manufacturer-funded trial in 210 men found a 0.2% caffeine topical non-inferior to minoxidil 5% on an anagen-ratio endpoint. A 2025 systematic review found only a few small controlled trials, mostly rated low or very low quality, and none in alopecia areata.
- Is it safe to combine caffeine with other topical treatments? Two small trials, reported only in a Persian-language paper and a conference abstract, have tested caffeine with minoxidil and favoured the combination. Caffeine with topical finasteride, ketoconazole or plant oils has never been studied, so no source can call those combinations safe.
- Does the caffeine in the scalp reach the follicles or stay on the surface? In small studies, mostly on chest or leg skin rather than the scalp, topical caffeine entered hair follicles within minutes. Whether enough reaches the follicle cells in the scalp to affect hair growth has not been shown.
