TLDR Alligator pepper seed extract improved wound healing in rats.
The study investigated the wound healing properties of Alligator pepper (Aframomum melegueta) seed extract on albino rats. Thirty-two rats were divided into four groups, with one serving as a control and the others treated with a reference drug or 10% and 20% extract concentrations. Over 21 days, wound size reduction and serum oxidative stress biomarkers (TNF-α, MDA, and SOD) were measured, and tissue samples were histopathologically examined. The group treated with 10% extract showed the smallest wound size of 5.5mm by day 19, and histological analysis revealed new tissue formation and hair follicle regeneration. The study concluded that the extract enhanced wound healing more effectively than the control. Behavioral changes such as lethargy and anorexia were also noted in the treated groups.
