TLDR VVF alone can't fully describe porosity in granular scaffolds.
The study investigates the void volume fraction (VVF) of granular scaffolds using 3D simulations to understand its relationship with particle size, form, and composition. It finds that VVF is less predictable than particle count across replicate scaffolds and is highly sensitive to parameters like image quality, magnification, analysis software, and intensity threshold. The research highlights that while VVF can compare porosity within a study, it is unreliable across studies with different parameters. The study concludes that VVF alone is insufficient to describe porosity dimensions in granular scaffolds, suggesting the need for additional descriptors.
