TLDR People with alopecia areata had lower vitamin D levels, but these levels didn't relate to many aspects of the condition.
The study examined the relationship between vitamin D levels and alopecia areata (AA) in 100 participants, consisting of 50 patients with AA and 50 matched controls, at a dermatology center in Iran. It was found that patients with AA had significantly lower serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25-(OH)-D3] than the control group. Additionally, there was a notable inverse relationship between vitamin D levels and the severity of AA as well as age, but no significant correlation with gender, disease duration, recurrence, nail involvement, or family history of AA. The study concluded that despite lower levels of vitamin D in AA patients, these levels did not correlate with several aspects of the disease, suggesting that more research is needed to understand the potential benefits of vitamin D supplementation in the treatment of AA.
