TLDR People with severe and long-lasting alopecia areata often have low vitamin D levels, and treatments with vitamin D-like substances might help.
The systematic review titled "Vitamin D Deficiency in Patients with Alopecia Aerata, and Responsiveness to Vitamin D Analogues" concluded that Vitamin D deficiency in alopecia aerata correlates inversely with disease severity and duration. The study also found that Vitamin D receptor expression is reduced in alopecia aerata and inversely correlates with inflammation histologically, but does not correlate with serum vitamin D levels, severity, pattern, or duration of illness. The review considered a total of 10 papers, including five research that met the criteria. The search for relevant studies was conducted on PubMed and SagePub databases, considering publications from 2013 to 2023.
