TLDR Certain changes in the VEGF gene can increase or decrease the risk of polycystic ovary syndrome.
In 2020, three studies were conducted to investigate the association between VEGF gene polymorphisms and the risk of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The first study involved 1,000 participants and found a significant association between the polymorphisms rs2010963, rs699947, and rs833061 and an increased risk of PCOS. The second study, a meta-analysis of 9 studies, found decreased associations between rs2010963, +9812, +405 polymorphisms and PCOS risk, and increased associations between rs699947, rs833061, rs1570360, rs3025020, rs3025039 polymorphisms and PCOS susceptibility. The third study, involving 10,665 participants, found that five SNPs (rs699947, rs833061, rs1570360, rs3025020, rs3025039) may increase the risk of PCOS, while three SNPs (rs2010963, +9812, +405) may have a protective effect. All studies suggested that VEGF gene polymorphisms could potentially serve as early detection biomarkers for women at risk of PCOS.
