TLDR Using powdered umbilical remnant allograft can effectively treat chronic scalp wounds resistant to traditional treatments.
The document presents a case study of an 84-year-old woman suffering from erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp (EPDS), a rare disease often linked with baldness. Traditional treatments failed to improve her condition, which was marked by a chronic, crusted ulceration on the scalp. A new treatment approach using powdered umbilical remnant allograft (URA) was introduced and applied weekly for 8 weeks. This resulted in a 45% reduction in wound size by the 4th week and almost complete resolution by the 8th week, with no recurrence over 9 months. The healing properties of URA are credited to the presence of extracellular matrix components and growth factors. This is the first instance of URA being effectively used in treating a chronic wound resistant to traditional EPDS therapy.
