TLDR Acne is a common skin condition treated with creams, antibiotics, and emerging therapies, and it can significantly affect mental well-being.
Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that affects individuals of all ages, particularly adolescents, and is characterized by comedones, papules, pustules, and in severe cases, nodules and cysts. Its pathogenesis involves hormonal imbalances, increased sebum production, abnormal follicular keratinization, and the colonization of Propionibacterium acnes. Various factors such as genetic susceptibility, diet, and environmental influences contribute to acne development and exacerbation. Management strategies include topical agents like retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and antibiotics, and systemic therapies like oral antibiotics, hormonal agents, and isotretinoin. Emerging therapies include laser and light-based therapies, photodynamic therapy, and the use of probiotics and botanical extracts. The psychological impact of acne, affecting self-esteem, body image, and social interactions, emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to patient care.
