TLDR ROR2 is crucial for hair follicle stem cell maintenance and self-renewal.
This study explored the role of ROR2, a Wnt receptor, in hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs), focusing on β-catenin-independent Wnt signaling. Researchers found that ROR2 was crucial for regulating Wnt-activated signaling necessary for HFSC activation and self-renewal. Additionally, ROR2 was essential for maintaining the ATM/ATR-dependent DNA damage response, vital for the long-term maintenance of HFSCs. The study also revealed that ROR2-PKC signaling played a compensatory role in protecting β-catenin-null HFSCs from losing their stem cell pool. Overall, the research highlighted a previously unrecognized role of ROR2 in stem cell self-renewal and maintenance.
