Ulerythema Ophryogenes (Keratosis Pilaris Atrophicans Faciei)

    M. Ferrara
TLDR Ulerythema ophryogenes causes hair thinning and inflammation, with limited treatment options.
Ulerythema ophryogenes (UO) was described as an inherited keratinization disorder that typically appeared sporadically, either at birth or in early life. It was marked by keratosis pilaris, eyebrow thinning, and inflammation. The disorder involved a keratin plug in the hair follicle, leading to hair thinning and inflammation, which could result in scarring alopecia. UO was sometimes associated with atopy and hereditary diseases like Noonan syndrome. Treatments such as emollients, vitamin A, and retinoids were largely ineffective, though topical corticosteroids provided temporary relief for erythema, and dye laser treatment was effective in some cases.
