TLDR Parents of women with PCOS have a higher risk of Type II diabetes and insulin resistance, especially fathers.
The study investigated the prevalence of Type II diabetes mellitus and insulin resistance in parents of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) compared to parents of healthy women, involving 200 parents of women with PCOS and 120 parents of healthy women. It found that the prevalence of Type II diabetes was 1.89 times higher in parents of women with PCOS, with significantly higher insulin resistance in this group. Fathers of PCOS women showed more metabolic abnormalities than mothers, suggesting a potential paternal genetic component. The study highlighted the importance of targeted screening and prevention strategies for this high-risk group and noted a possible link between PCOS and premature male-pattern balding in male relatives, indicating a shared genetic susceptibility.
