TLDR Traumatic stress and alexithymia may contribute to alopecia areata.
This study investigated the relationship between traumatic experiences, dissociative symptoms, and alexithymia in patients with alopecia areata (AA). It included 58 patients with AA, 58 individuals with other dermatological diseases, and 58 healthy individuals. Participants were assessed using various psychological scales. The study found significant differences in physical and emotional neglect scores between the groups, suggesting these factors may play a significant role in the onset of AA. Additionally, alexithymia and symptoms of traumatic stress disorder were more prevalent in patients with AA, although no differences were found in dissociative symptoms.
