TLDR The study found that androgen receptors in skin cells mainly affect the focal adhesion pathway and control the caveolin-1 gene, with implications for new treatments for related diseases.
The 2022 study by Fujibayashi et al. investigated the role of the androgen receptor (AR) in dermal papilla cells, which are involved in testosterone signaling and related diseases like androgenetic alopecia and prostate cancer. The researchers found that the activation of AR signaling primarily affected the focal adhesion pathway and that the expression of the caveolin-1 gene was downregulated in AR-expressing cells, suggesting that caveolin-1 is controlled by AR. Additionally, the expression level of EGFR was upregulated in AR expressing cells, indicating a cross-talk of AR and EGF signals. These findings could potentially lead to the discovery of new therapeutic targets for AR-related diseases.
