Use of Topical Finasteride vs Systemic Finasteride in Male Pattern Baldness

    R.V Kumar
TLDR Both topical and oral finasteride are equally effective for treating male pattern baldness.
The study compared the effectiveness of topical versus systemic finasteride in treating male androgenic alopecia. It involved 30 male patients divided into two groups: one received topical finasteride (0.1%) with minoxidil (5%), and the other received topical minoxidil with oral finasteride (1 mg). Over 6 months, both groups showed significant increases in hair counts and terminal hair counts. Initially, the topical group showed better improvement, but long-term results indicated that both treatments were similarly effective.

A 21-year-old male suffering from male pattern baldness is using topical finasteride and minoxidil, and oral minoxidil. His bloodwork shows normal DHT levels and slightly high testosterone, leading to discussions about the role of DHT sensitivity in hair loss, the potential impact of finasteride on his DHT levels, and the suggestion to proceed with oral finasteride due to his high testosterone.
