TLDR Minoxidil improved hair growth in a child with a rare genetic disorder.
A 9-year-old girl with trichorhinophalangeal syndrome type 1 (TRPS 1), a rare genetic disorder causing slow hair growth and thinning, showed significant improvement in hair density and length after 4 months of treatment with topical minoxidil 5% foam applied three times weekly. TRPS 1 is caused by mutations in the TRPS1 gene, which regulates hair follicle number and hair morphogenesis. Minoxidil enhances hair growth through various mechanisms, including vasodilation, anti-inflammation, induction of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, and its antiandrogenic effect. The rarity of adverse side effects makes topical minoxidil acceptable for pediatric patients. This case suggests that topical minoxidil is a promising therapeutic option for individuals with TRPS 1, although further research and long-term follow-up studies are needed.
