TLDR Topical minoxidil can help some men regrow hair, but results vary and may decline after a year.
This review from 1988 discussed the use of topical minoxidil for treating male pattern baldness. It found that about one-third of patients experienced terminal hair growth when using a 2 to 3% solution twice daily. Treatment needed to last at least six months to assess effectiveness. Factors that contributed to successful hair growth included starting treatment at a younger age, having thinning hair rather than complete baldness, and noticing hair growth within three months. However, the benefits might decrease after one year of use, and stopping the medication could worsen hair loss. Patients with hypertension, cardiovascular disease, or serious systemic illnesses were advised against using minoxidil. Regular monitoring, including blood pressure and heart health assessments, was recommended every four to six months.
