TLDR 1% topical minoxidil helped some hair regrow, but only one person had noticeable results.
A study conducted in 1985 investigated the effects of 1% topical minoxidil on 23 individuals with alopecia areata over a 3-month period. The double-blind crossover study found that 13 patients experienced some increase in terminal hair growth, with a statistically significant difference compared to the placebo group (p < 0.005). However, only one case resulted in cosmetically satisfying hair growth. Additionally, two male patients experienced an increase in blood pressure following the withdrawal of minoxidil lotion.
