TLDR A toddler who accidentally swallowed hair growth medicine experienced serious heart-related side effects but recovered after hospital treatment.
A one-and-a-half-year-old male toddler accidentally ingested approximately 3-5 mL (150-250 mg) of 5% topical minoxidil hair formulation and presented to the hospital 45 minutes later in a drowsy state. The child experienced significant cardiovascular toxicity, including hypotension and tachycardia, but no vomiting, breathlessness, or aspiration. Initial treatment included oxygen supplementation and intravenous fluids, followed by dopamine infusion in the pediatric intensive care unit. The child's condition improved over the course of 4 days, with blood pressures stabilizing and tachycardia gradually reducing. All cardiac markers and renal function remained within normal limits throughout the hospital stay. The case highlights the potential for severe cardiovascular effects from accidental ingestion of minoxidil, a medication used for hypertension emergencies and male pattern baldness, which can cause marked vasodilation and reflex increase in myocardial contractility. The paper emphasizes the need for child-resistant packaging and parental education to prevent accidental poisoning in children.
