TLDR Thiolated cyclodextrin-based nanoparticles effectively deliver Minoxidil for scalp treatment without causing skin irritation.
The study aimed to develop and characterize thiolated cyclodextrin-based nanoparticles for the topical delivery of Minoxidil (MXD). Thiolated β-cyclodextrins (β-CDs) were synthesized and used to encapsulate MXD, forming nanoparticles through ionic gelation with chitosan. These nanoparticles, with sizes ranging from 231 nm to 319 nm and zeta potentials between -8.1 to +12.0, showed no interaction between the drug and excipients. The thiolated nanoparticles exhibited delayed drug release, improved retention on hair surfaces, and enhanced drug retention without causing skin irritation in rabbits. The results suggest that MXD-loaded thiolated β-CD nanoparticles could be an effective drug delivery system for treating scalp diseases.
