TLDR Magnesium and caspase inhibitors help protect hearing after gunshot noise.
This research focused on evaluating new therapeutic strategies for treating acoustic trauma from gunshot noise in guinea pigs. It examined different treatment methods, including intra-cochlear perfusion of methylprednisolone, which accelerated hearing recovery and preserved hair cells. Magnesium supplementation over a month was found to be the most effective for hair cell preservation. The study also tested anti-apoptotic treatments, finding that intra-cochlear administration of z-VAD-FMK was effective in preserving hair cells and aiding hearing recovery, while leupeptin was not. The findings suggested that caspase inhibitors could be potential therapies for preventing hair cell death due to gunshot noise, emphasizing the importance of early pharmacological intervention.
