TLDR Magnesium and caspase inhibitors help protect hearing after gunshot noise.
This research evaluated new therapeutic strategies for treating acoustic trauma from gunshot noise in guinea pigs. The study focused on different treatment methods, including intra-cochlear perfusion of methylprednisolone, which accelerated hearing recovery and preserved hair cells. Long-term magnesium supplementation was found to be the most effective for hair cell preservation. Additionally, the study tested anti-apoptotic treatments, finding that intra-cochlear administration of z-VAD-FMK was effective in preserving hair cells and accelerating hearing recovery, while leupeptin was not. The findings suggested that caspase inhibitors could be potential therapeutic candidates for limiting hair cell loss due to gunshot noise. The research highlighted the importance of early pharmacological intervention following acoustic trauma.
