TLDR Celtis choseniana may help treat hair loss by reducing androgen effects and boosting hair growth signals.
This study explored the potential of Celtis choseniana Nakai (C. choseniana) as a treatment for androgenic alopecia (AGA). Using a testosterone propionate-induced AGA mouse model and dihydrotestosterone-treated human hair follicle dermal papilla cells, the researchers found that C. choseniana reduced serum dihydrotestosterone levels and the expression of 5α-reductase 2 and androgen receptors. It also increased hair regrowth rates and induced the anagen phase in the mouse model. Additionally, C. choseniana promoted cellular proliferation by upregulating proliferation factors and proteins related to the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway while downregulating the Wnt inhibitor dickkopf-1. These findings suggest that C. choseniana could be an effective therapeutic agent for AGA by inhibiting androgen action and activating Wnt/β-catenin signaling.
